Infant & toddler classroom design
This classroom was designed for infants and toddlers. It is very interchangeable. The set up is based on learning centers. The centers are divided up by walls to keep traffic at a minimum because we all know that infants & toddlers love to crawl, run, & jump all over everything so this helps slow it down. We have diapering & restrooms in the corner, sinks near the messy area where science, sensory, & art activities can be done, then gross motor where children can refine their physical skills using various things like the indoor tunnel. Across from sensory is dramatic play. Blocks & construction/table toys is across from gross motor. Towards the back of the classroom are the most quiet areas such as library & writing, distanced from all of the louder areas so that children can relax. In the middle is the circle time mat for group activities, floor games, & music. Towards the beginning of the classroom there are tables for various teacher guided activities & meals.
PRESCHOOL CLASSROOM DESIGN
For the preschool classroom the children are mostly toilet trained & can navigate the room without too much craziness. The entrance is similar to the infant & toddler room however the bathroom is more towards the back of the classroom. The quiet areas are on the opposite side of the room from the louder areas. The messy areas such as sensory, art, and science as well as meal time/teacher guided area is near the bathroom for easy access to clean up. Math & manipulatives are towards the middle as the noise level isn't too high & can balance out the room.
SCHOOL AGE CLASSROOM DESIGN
Just like with the other two classrooms the set up is fairly similar with the idea that when entering there is an area for personal item storage, bathrooms near the messier learning areas, & separation of loud & quiet areas of the room. There are less "discovery" based learning tools such as sensory tubs as it is not developmentally appropriate. There are bigger sections for math & manipulatives & science. There aren't play based areas but more critical thinking areas & creatives areas for drama & art. In the middle of the classroom is where the students have their general teacher directed desks & study time & if the class eats in the classroom then they use those tables to eat as well (of course after being sanitized!). The children are older & are able to navigate the internet so there is a quiet computer center with parental controls.
